DAAD Alumni Event: "Just Indonesia, Free from Dicrimination and Violence" at University of North Sumatra
The event opened with a series of impactful speeches, including remarks from the Deputy Director of the DAAD Jakarta Office, Muji Rahayu Nutihastari, and the Attaché for Science and Research of the German Embassy in Jakarta, Annisa Fitria. Dr. Mahmul Siregar SH, M.Hum., Dean of FH USU Medan, and Prof. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, a DAAD alumna and chair of the event, also gave opening speeches.
The DAAD Alumni Seminar followed, moderated by Souvia Rahimah, a DAAD alumna from Universitas Padjadjaran. Keynote speeches were delivered on critical topics such as “Marginality, Nation, Violence, and Visual Culture” by Prof. Thomas Stodulka from Universität Münster, and “Legal Certainty for the Protection of Persons with Disabilities: Accessing Higher Education—Regulation vs Facts” by Prof. Ningrum Natasya Sirait from USU Medan.
In addition, the seminar featured a talk by DAAD alumna Dewi Candraningrum on the theme “My Tongue, My Stories: Women are Caring, Cooking, Planting, to Protect the Planetary Life.” The morning concluded with a Q&A session, providing participants with the opportunity to engage with the speakers.
The afternoon sessions were divided into parallel sessions, moderated by DAAD alumni Onny Setyawati from Universitas Brawijaya and Nurhayati Nanang Agus from Universitas Jambi. These sessions covered various pressing issues, including sexual violence against children, ecological degradation, and activism in Indonesia. Notable presentations included “Shadow Refugees: The Risk against Children Sexual Violence” by Rosmalinda Rohan and “Sedekah Sampah Plastik Movement at Pesantren Mamba’ul Hikam Jombang: Intersection between Ecofeminism and Eco-Islam” by Zaimatus Sa’diyah.
The event concluded with DAAD alumni networking sessions, providing a platform for alumni to reconnect, share experiences, and discuss collaborative opportunities. The event underscored the commitment of DAAD alumni and their partners to addressing social justice, environmental sustainability, and equality in Indonesia.
